Lisa Wingate is a former journalist, inspirational speaker, and New York Times Bestselling Author of thirty novels. Her work has garnered or been nominated for many awards, including the Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize, the Oklahoma Book Award, The Carol Award, the Christy Award, and the RT Booklovers Reviewer’s Choice Award. Her blockbuster hit, Before We Were Yours remained on the New York Times Bestseller List for over a year, was Publishers Weekly’s #3 longest running bestseller of 2017, and was voted by readers as the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award winner for historical fiction. The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library and the Friends of the Library cosponsor this event.  
 Elizabeth will present important information about current adoption practices and what foster care looks like today. She also plans to talk about the differences between past and current practices, foster/adoptive parent training, and the oversight of homes. 
 Elizabeth has worked with children and families for the past 30 years. She has worked for the Schenectady County Office of Children’s Services for almost 9 years.  Five of the last 9 years, she focused on Child Protective Services.  Currently, Elizabeth supervises the Adoption/Foster Home Finding Unit for Schenectady County. ​

​As the popularity of DNA testing increases, adoptees and others looking to solve long-standing family mysteries are routinely adding this powerful evidence to their search strategy toolbox.  Professional genealogist Lisa Dougherty will guide attendees through the basics of utilizing DNA test results, give suggestions for useful online resources, and share her personal family stories in adoption research.   
 
Lisa Dougherty has been active in tracing the history of not only her own family, but many others, for over 20 years.  A native of the Glens Falls, New York, she became interested in genealogy as a teenager when her father began investigating the origins of his Irish great grandparents.  A former volunteer at the National Archives in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, she now devotes her time to lecturing around the area on family history, and assisting family researchers monthly at four capital region area libraries, including the Irish-American Heritage Museum in Albany, where she is the genealogist-in-residence.  She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, as well as several other area genealogical groups.  A subscriber to Ancestry.com for over 15 years, she specializes in online research and the effective use of websites to investigate family history.  She resides in Guilderland, New York with her husband and teenage son.  For more information, visit her website at www.upstatenygenealogy.com.

​This film, based on true events, explores the story of a woman who runs an orphanage that harbors a dark secret. Georgia Tann (Mary Tyler Moore) is a beloved member of the Memphis community.
